Container with landscape and figure design
- Carved lacquer
- China, Qing dynasty, Qianlong period (r.1735–1796)
- Collection of National Museum of China
This box-shaped container was used to carry personal belongings. It features a handle at the top, and below its handle, there are two drawers and two doors at the front. The six panels surrounding the box depict landscapes, including mountains, water, a pavilion, a boat picking lotus flowers, a garden with willow trees, and scholars in dialogue. Once owned by the Qing imperial family, this carrying box exemplifies the excellence of the tihong technique, showcasing intricate patterns carved in multiple layers of red lacquer—a hallmark of court craftsmanship from that period.
