Bowls and a cup with Japanese-parsley design
  • Lacquerware with maki-e
  • Japan, Azuchi–momoyama period, 16th century
  • Collection of Tokyo National Museum
This set of tableware is one of a hundred maki-e ware offerings of the warlord Hojo Ujimasa (1538–1590) to a temple. The five red-lacquered objects are decorated with the Japanese-parsley design in the hira maki-e technique, comprising a set. From left to right, the set includes a rice bowl and a soup bowl in the front, a bowl for seasoned dishes and a bowl for steamed dishes at the back, and a sake cup in the middle. This tableware would have been used to entertain guests with its subdued glam design.
