Box with lotus scroll design
- Lacquerware with mother-of-pearl and turtle-shell inlay
- Joseon dynasty, 17th–18th century
- Collection of National Museum of Korea
This lacquer box with mother-of-pearl features Goryeo lacquerware, using turtle shells, metal wires, and a slightly bowed-edge lid. The large patterns and generous arrangements, on the other hand, reflect the style of the Joseon dynasty. During the Goryeo period, boxes with mother-of-pearl inlaid lacquer were used to hold sutras, whereas those produced in the Joseon period were made for storing clothing, medicine, and documents.
