Clothing box with a pair of phoenixes and plum blossom design
  • Lacquerware with mother-of-pearl inlay
  • Joseon dynasty, 19th–20th century
  • Collection of National Museum of Korea
The box is decorated with thick mother-of-pearl in a mosaic style. Its application on a large box like this is rare and this unusual design appeared in the late Joseon dynasty. The generous use of mother-of-pearl gives the box a luxurious appearance. A pair of phoenixes adorns the top while the sides feature plum blossoms, bamboo, and orchids, which are crafted with the jureumjil and kkeuneumjil techniques.
